Sonoma Ecology Center has created a Project Story Map to highlight 25 projects they have worked on in the past 25 years. Highlighted projects include Summer Science Camp, Sonoma Overlook Trail, and Sediment Source Analysis.

North Bay GIS Day 2019

This year the North Bay GIS User Group hosted close to 300 elementary students, GIS professionals, and the general public at our annual GIS Day event. We had some fantastic presentations, an exhibit hall filled with local agencies and vendors, a map gallery showing off the vast array of mapping in our region, the ever popular AR Sandbox, and public safety vehicles. It was a fun event that we look forward to every year! If you missed it this year don’t worry join us next year.

In Napa Valley, Future Landscapes Are Viewed in the Past

The New York Times has an article about how historical maps are being used to help restoration of ecosystems in the Napa Valley. The work is being done by San Francisco Estuary Institute, who has presented at past North Bay GIS User Group Meetings.

SRJC Summer Class - GIS Applications In Natural Resource Management

Santa Rosa Junior College is offering an introductory course, NRM 87 -- GIS Applications in Natural Resource Management. This class runs from June 14th through July 25th and will be held at the Santa Rosa campus with additional field work at the Shone Farm. Taught by experienced SRJC instructor, Tim Pudoff, this course satisfies a requirement for SRJC geo-spatial and natural resource certificate programs, as well as being a primer for new GIS students.

Topics covered include an introduction to vector and raster data models, basic cartography, data development, spatial analysis, and the basics of field data collection. The course will be taught from the perspective of a natural resource manager or conservation planner with a particular focus on features within Sonoma County’s planning watersheds. Students will be taking an inventory of conditions using local data, and will examine the interrelationships between different types of human activity and the environment. New or returning students, staff at government agencies and employees in local business that have an interest in understanding how GIS data can be used to better understand the local landscape, are encouraged to sign up and participate!

Napa County 2014 Orthophotos and LiDAR Available

Napa County GIS is proud to announce that our 2014 orthophotography products are now available to the public. They are not available for download. However, you can purchase the entire dataset from the San Francisco Estuary Institute for $300 including a hard drive. Their contact info is:

The 2014 Orthophoto project includes 6 inch resolution, 4-band imagery for the entire county. There is also 3 inch resolution imagery for the cities of American Canyon, Napa and Yountville. LiDAR data was captured for much of the Napa River valley. The entire dataset is about 600 Gb.

Our imagery is also included in Esri's free World Imagery Service.
